This painting comes from a selfie of mine (on the right) part of a series, taken at home right after buying a pineapple.

That fruit led me to discover that, in history, pineapples were so rare and fascinating that people would rent one to display on their tables for important occasions. The same pineapple, I’ve read, could be hired for a dozen different tables in London before finally being sold to be eaten.
